Dry cracked heels are not only unsightly, they’re unhealthy.
Medically known as heel fissures, dry cracked heels occur because the skin on the bottom of the foot is dry, rough and flaky. Calluses often develop around the border of a cracked heel, and if left untreated the cracks may deepen and become incredibly painful.
Several different factors can contribute to dry cracked heels, including:
  • Weight gain or obesity
  • Wearing open-back shoes
  • Walking around barefoot
  • Skin conditions such as eczema or psoriasis
  • Medical conditions such as diabetes
  • Living in a dry climate
Dry cracked heels may eventually lead to an appointment with a podiatrist, but moisturizing the feet regularly is often enough to help clear up the problem.
